Retribution
I am Baraka Shamia, a Kenyan visual artist born in 1996. I pursued a BA Fine Art and Design at Kenyatta
University. My works have featured in group exhibitions in Kenya and Germany. I worked part time as a
studio assistant at Brush Tu artists’ studio before moving out of Nairobi to find my space. I work and
live in Kakamega
About 'RETRIBUTION'
This set of works borrows from the main concepts of nature; life and death.
The occurrence of life, the invitation of death by life itself and the recurrence of life thereafter.
I challenge the popular notion that death, in whatever form it may occur; through disease, the breakdown of parts of the physical body or destruction of the entire physical body, to possibly be a consequence of sin.
Ululations are heard numerously in celebration of good harvests, new life, fruitfulness, blossom and freshness. Another time ululations are made as an announcement of demise, decomposition and rot. And yet another time ululations are replaced with silence and bare fields, a drying crop with faded rows and columns.
