Lisa Milroy
Paper Safari - works on paper by Lisa Milroy
One Off Contemporary Art Gallery, Nairobi
The starting point for Lisa Milroy’s exhibition Paper Safari is pleasure – the pleasure to be found in drawing. For her third solo show at One Off Contemporary Art Gallery, the walls have been filled with over a hundred drawings, monoprints and gouaches made over the past 30 years. The show also includes a form of 3-drawing through a selection of unfired clay objects. Since the 1980s Milroy has been engaged with the tradition of still life, and here again she focuses on objects that populate daily life. They are gathered into seven themes: ‘Clothing and Shoes’, ‘Flowers and Food’, ‘Sewing and Textiles’, ‘Pattern’, ‘Beans, Rocks and Feathers’, ‘Painting, Making and the Studio’ and ‘Everyday Objects’, all generating motifs that continue to shape Milroy’s practice.
The exhibition conveys Milroy’s enjoyment in the art of describing, of picking up a pencil, a stick of charcoal or paintbrush for the fun of simply transcribing an image onto a sheet of paper. Graphic materials at play in the exhibition include charcoal, gouache, chalk pastel, and pencil in tandem with newsprint, A4, Hannemuhle, Fabriano and Somerset papers.
Drawing is not only pleasurable, but also fuels Milroy’s interest in the nature of representation, putting it at the heart of her practice.
Rarely working directly from observation, Milroy prefers to draw and paint from mental images cultivated from recollections and memories. Drawing allows her to make an immediate graphic response to a nexus of feelings and ideas connected to an object. Triggering a web of associations, her depictions embody more what it feels like to be in the presence of an object than what the object looks like. The act of depicting through drawing allows the artist to tap into and explore critical perspectives that have come to define her practice - notions of time, owning/keeping/losing, desire and need. Materiality and the sense of touch are key, generating the particular energy and emotional feel of any one of Milroy’s works on paper, in whichever medium.
Visitors to Paper Safari are invited to choose their pathway through the drawings covering the gallery walls as if on an expedition to discover and explore their response to what a drawing can be, while keeping in mind their own take on familiar everyday objects. And perhaps find in themselves the urge to pick up a pencil start drawing!

Lisa Milroy was born in Vancouver, Canada and lives and works in London.
Still life is at the heart of Milroy’s practice. In the 1980s her paintings featured ordinary objects depicted against an off-white background. Subsequently her imagery expanded to include depictions of objects within settings, as well as landscape, architecture, food, people, pattern and textiles. As her approaches to still life diversified, so did her manner of painting, giving rise to a range of stylistic innovations. Throughout her practice, Milroy has been fascinated by the relation between stillness and movement, and the nature of making and looking at painting.
Milroy won First Prize in the John Moores Painting Prize 1989 and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005. She has taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL since 2009. Milroy was Artist Trustee of Tate from 2013-17 and Liaison Trustee to the National Gallery from 2015-17. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including Tate, Frac Occitanie Montpellier, France, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany, Metropolitan Museum of Art, USA, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan, and East African Visual Arts Trust, Kenya. Milroy is represented by Kate MacGarry, London, and in East Africa by One Off Contemporary Art Gallery, Nairobi.
In 2015 Milroy set up Hands On Art Workshops with support from Vodafone Foundation, Vodafone’s charitable arm and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Hands On Art Workshops offers a programme of practical art workshops for primary and secondary school students in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya delivered through video conference and mobile phone messaging, as well as a range of other educational initiatives. UK-based artist Stephanie Nebbia joined Hands On Art Workshops as Co-Director in 2020, and Milroy and Nebbia work closely with Joy Maraka, UNHCR Education Assistant based in Kakuma. Milroy and Nebbia travel to Kakuma Refugee Camp regularly to deliver art workshops in person, working with support from the UNHCR Education Unit. Hands On Art Workshops also works in partnership with Windle International Kenya, Colart, Book Aid International and Slade School of Fine Art, UCL.
Milroy’s solo exhibition Paper Safari at One Off Contemporary Art Gallery in March 2024 features over 100 works on paper selected from the past 30 years, including drawing in charcoal and ink, gouache and monoprint.
