A collection of eggshell mosaic works depicting the artist's life as a child raised by a hard working single parent
Artist’s statement ‘When I think of my Mom’
In this exhibition, I am presenting ‘When I think of my Mom’, a body of work which is the first chapter in a series called ‘Letter to my Mom art series’. I began this body of work in 2022.
The imagery in these artworks is inspired by scenes, physical structures and personalities that are found in markets and shops within the Mukuru slum community. My intention in creating these urbanscapes in the work is to highlight the attractiveness and depth of emotions that are a constant part of my social surroundings. The human figures in these mosaics represent my family members.
‘Letter to my Mom series’ has been, in place of words, written in the form of visual imagery. This is a letter written to all the single Mothers who give their all to bring up their kids, in spite of difficulties. This body of work shows how strong, hardworking and selfless my Mom has been over the years.
These mosaics are what comes to my mind through my hand, when I think of my Mom. Nairobi – May 2023
