Naomi Van Rampelberg
Anxiety: My Muse
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
‘As art connects us with our emotions, the muse ‘Anxiety’, the ultimate emotion we all willy-nilly undergo, should be approached with the utmost trepidation.
These countless and delicate dots, do so most tenderly.’ MVR
"...in her dot world there is a gentleness and a grace; there is coordination, cooperation and balance: harmony." D. Martin
Said of a previous exhibition at One Off Gallery; “And the dignity of labour brings its reward, for although this is Van Rampelberg’s first solo show, it looks more like the work of an artist at the peak of her powers.” F. Walley, The East African, Nov 15-21, 2014
One Off Contemporary Art Gallery is proud to host a third exhibition for Naomi Van Rampelberg.
‘Art allows the expression of emotion in an abstract form’ says the multi-talented Naomi Van Rampelberg.
Art might be said to run in her veins. Born in 1983, her earliest memories are of making her own ‘master pieces’. Raised in a home where both parents were artists and her father was a collector of contemporary East African art, her entire being was surrounded by a cacocphany of inspirations. Despite these powerful influences, Van Rampelberg chose to study for a degree in Cultural Anthropology from Concordia University in Montreal. Needless to say, she returned immediately to her first love, of art.
Initially dotting glass paint on glass, when the wine bottles ran out, she painted any glass object she could lay her hands on; bowls, vases, pendants and a beautiful range of light fittings were the result. She developed her own meticulous style of intricate dot painting with each creation taking as much as sixty hours to complete.
From those auspicious beginnings, her inspirational glassware has led to her latest collection of paper works, each dotted or covered with minute circles. The delicate colours flow into each other and give the works a three-dimensional quality.
Once again, this artist has invested literally thousands of hours in her output. The result is an intensely beautiful and subtle show, worthy of any collection of contemporary art anywhere in the world, an impressive international product rooted in the soil of Africa.
