                                 ABOUT THE ARTIST

Margaret Ngigi (b. 1996 - Kenya) is a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker, raised and currently living in Kenya. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Film Production and Directing from the United States International University of Africa. Margaret has been practicing photography
since 2015, during which time she has won awards including the 2022 East African Photography Award and has been nominated as the 2020 Photo London Emerging Photographer of the Year.

Internationally she has exhibited her work at art fairs including Photo Basel (2020, 2021 represented by AKKA Project) and Photo London (2020) and has held solo shows such as Murky Waters in London (2020).
She has worked with a number of galleries including AKKA Project - UAE, Doyle Wham - London and One Off Contemporary Art Gallery here in Nairobi.

She considers her work to be her personal diary, a visual record of her growth and development as she navigates the world around her. Her work explores the complexities of growing up, grappling with the changes and challenges that come with transitioning to adulthood
and womanhood. Previous themes in her work include topics such as marriage with her series Mke Mwema and the position of women in society with her Murky Waters series. Through her work, she seeks to capture the many facets of this journey, the emotions and experiences that
define us as individuals; she hopes to inspire others to embrace their own
personal journeys, to appreciate the beauty and complexity of life, and to celebrate the many stages of growth and development that we all experience as human beings.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Forever is Not Ours, seeks to explore the complex and paradoxical nature of human mortality.

I believe that there is a strange and haunting beauty in the impermanence of life, looking into the interplay between life and death and how time serves as a constant reminder of our fragile
existence. These hazy, ghostly portraits serve as mirrors of ourselves, not to be dark or haunting but to infuse a sense of beauty and grace that serves as a counterpoint to the inevitability of our own mortality.

I seek to break down the taboo subject surrounding death and to confront the viewer with its inevitable presence in our lives. At the same time, through experience, I am keenly aware of the
sadness and tragedy of our mortality. Through my work, I hope to evoke a range of emotions and questions in the viewer. Ultimately, my goal is to explore and understand the mysteries of life and death. I believe that by confronting our own mortality through art, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the preciousness and fragility of life.
